Cooking with Cannabis Oil

Enjoy the effects of cannabis, but want to switch up your method of consumption? Cannabis oil is a great way to switch things up. We’ve all heard of basic edibles, such as cookies or brownies. But what about garlic pasta or brioche French toast? The possibilities are endless with cannabis oil.

So, how does one go about making it?

To start off, there are several types of base oils depending on flavor preferences or the type of dishes you want to cook. Some oil options include vegetable, olive, coconut, and avocado. The most standard kind of base oil would be canola or vegetable oil due to their more neutral flavors. On the other hand, oils made with peanuts or sesame would have stronger flavors.

When starting the process of cannabis, it is important to note that a 1:1 ratio of cannabis to oil is preferred. If seeking more mild effects, try using less cannabis and more oil.

The first step in this process is to decarb the cannabis. To make this process easier, try decarboxylating your weed prior to combining it with oil. The process of decarbing your weed turns the THCA into THC, which is necessary to make proper cannabis oil. To do this, preheat your oven to 245 degrees Fahrenheit. While your oven is preheating, break up your cannabis into small clumps onto parchment paper. Be careful not to grind up your cannabis too finely to where it would pass through a strainer. After this, put your cannabis in the oven and heat for about 30 minutes.

The second step is to combine the decarbed cannabis and oil. To do this, you are going to add both the oil and cannabis to a saucepan and simmer on low heat for about 2-3 hours. Be sure to periodically check the oil temperature so that it stays somewhere between 160 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

After this, it’s time to strain and store your oil. To do this, grab any mesh strainer or cheesecloth and put it over the container you’re planning to use for storage. Pour the mixture through it, but try not to squeeze it out. There you have it! Time to start cooking all your favorite foods, but with a twist. FYI – the cannabis oil will have a shelf life of roughly two-three months if kept refrigerated, so there’s time to brainstorm recipe ideas.
