Latinx & Asian Voices in Cannabis: Mario Guzman

As a part of our upcoming Diversity Education Discussions with MARY Mag, we’re going to be highlighting some words from our speakers to keep you satiated until January 18th.

Mario Guzman of Sherbinskis

What led you to launch your brand?

MG: Having built a reputation as a grower in the early days of prop 215 and SB420 people fell in love with the genetics that came from my work such as the gelato lineage and I fell in love with helping people. And I decided to dedicate my life to this amazing plant.

Why is diversity and inclusion across the cannabis industry important to you?

MG: Having come from a family that had its start on a 20×20 dirt floor, my father’s home for most of his young life, I learned to know what it’s like to have nothing and to feel like there is no way out. Diversity in our industry shows that people from all walks of life have the opportunity to be successful in this amazing space. No matter your color, religious beliefs, who you love or your background.

How is cannabis connected to your life?

MG: Having dedicated my life to the cannabis plant, I feel like the plant has done more for me than I could ever do for it. I’m lucky to be the guardian of these special genetics I hold and have had the opportunity to grow and share with this world. My connection and understanding of this plant is a gift I hold very close to my heart and am grateful for it. Helping people through cannabis and making a successful living from it legally is a dream come true.

What would you say most motivates you to do what you do?

MG: Making my family and children proud. Leaving a legacy that speaks to how much I cared and wanted to help people.

With this discussion being on MLK Day 2021, discuss the importance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s impact in your life OR share your favorite MLK quote.

MG: ”Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about what matters.”
