Nau Verde: Portugal’s First 100% Flax and Hemp Spinning Mill

Nau Verde is an innovative start-up. It focuses on creating Portugal’s first 100% flax and hemp spinning mill. The company is preparing to set up in the town of Rebordões. This town is in the municipality of Santo Tirso. They will use a former industrial building with 15,000 square metres of floor space. This building once housed units operated by Riopele and Filatex.

The company has a goal to bring linen yarn production back to Europe. Currently, production is concentrated in Asia. This effort is backed by an investment of almost €112 million. The investment includes the creation of 250 jobs.

Nau Verde is reviving flax and hemp spinning. It is already building this first wet-spinning unit. The company believes this will mark a turning point for the Portuguese and European textile industry. The company said this in an Instagram post.

The start-up coordinates the Lusitano Project, involving 17 partners. One of them is Guimarães-based Fibrenamics, which is committed to sustainable yarns. These yarns are produced from natural flax and hemp fibres. The project uses advanced processes to enhance fibre quality. It produces high-performance yarns for the premium segment. This information comes from a LinkedIn post by the CEO, Isabel Carneiro, vice-president of AEMinho.

Nau Verde also says that the environmental impact of the process has been reduced by between 50% and 60%. This is due to chemical and enzymatic treatments. These treatments are already in the industrial validation phase, reports Jornal de Negócios.

Nau Verde is supported by the PRR, under the Mobilising Agendas. It aims to contribute to the development of the European textile industry. The company plans to do this by combining innovation, sustainability, and industrial transformation. The CEO concluded this on LinkedIn.
